You hear a lot about overcoming your ego. It seems ego gets in the way sometimes. It instills fear and attempts to stop you from moving forward. During my coaching classes we learned about our Gremlins. I equated Gremlins to Ego. But recently I pondered this thing called Ego. What is it and is a good thing or a bad thing to have?
The Ego is one of three parts of Freud's Psychic Apparatus. This is his concept of how the mind works. The first part is the Id. You are born with the Id and it is unorganized and is the part of the personality that takes care of basic needs. It has no judgments or values. Babies cry because they need something! They are hungry, tired, wet or uncomfortable. I recently read a piece about toddlers who consider everything as theirs. They take toys from other children simply because they want it. Babies and toddlers have not developed enough to have an ego. They operate on basic instinct or through Id. Ego is the second part of the trio. It attempts to mediate between the Id and reality.
